Challenge

The redevelopment of a tight high street site to create an up-to-date retail environment, with maximum flexibility for future adaptation, using quality materials that are sympathetic to the surrounding areas, but present a modern visual.

Solution

The building has been constructed over three floors, with a predominant brickwork elevation and openings to each floor expressed differently – a single large opening to the ground floor to integrate the shopfront and stepped structural glazing to the upper floors to create a strong vertical emphasis to the façade. Crowborough Multicoloured Stock bricks were chosen to integrate the visual with other nearby buildings and to contrast the strong grey architectural windows and the photovoltaic panels which dominate the rear, south facing roof and façade. The finished building has been recognised by the Kingston Society for its contribution to enhancing the townscape of the Royal Borough.
