To create an extension that would provide a visual plinth to the existing concrete structure whilst presenting an active frontage with new entrances and expansive views in and out of the building.
The extension has been developed as a single modular form with simplified façade detailing throughout and specially fabricated corner bricks to suggest a greater perceived wall thickness and mass. Responding to the existing slate clad higher level balconies, architects chose Ibstock’s Linear Fireborn Freedom Blue Riven brickwork, in preference to a slate tile, to create seamless edge details and present a distinct contrast between the new and existing structures. The riven texture and deep colour of the special format linear bricks, used in combination with a repeat stacked bond design and recessed 3mm mortar joints, visually emphasises the linear, plinth form and strength of the façade.
