Park House, London

Challenge

To extend and reinvigorate a dark, damp and uninsulated typical 50’s detached house, in a beautiful park setting, into a modern sustainable home, within a restricted budget.

Solution

The house was pared back and redressed and extended into 3 smaller scale interlocking structures, each featuring its own distinct style and finish. The existing brick facades were over-insulated and re-clad, massively increasing the thermal mass of the structure and contributing to a final BREEAM excellent rating. Ibstock Smooth Blue Tilebricks were chosen as the cladding material as they created a modern, clean and slightly abstracted surface which allowed the structure to sit sympathetically in its landscape, alongside the nearby church. The lack of mortar joints, different proportions and specially engineered tile-lip created a distinctly solid appearance that contrasted well with the hardwood slats and glass elements of the other two volumes.
