To provide additional space for a study, small apartment and guest bedroom whilst maintaining the existing hierarchy of buildings at the RIBA Manser Medal shortlisted Oak Farm scheme.
The new west-facing extension was designed and built in the form of a simple, black box with limited fenestration in order to contrast with the warm red sandstone of the Grade II listed 17th century farmhouse, and its existing modernist wing, and create the appearance of a farm outbuilding. This difference was perfectly realised through the use of Ibstock Linear Natural Blue brick, laid in a quarter bond with atypical recessed 6mm joints, which, alongside its distinctive hue and texture, serve to accentuate the linearity of the new extension and formalise its unique character within the tripartite complex.
