Kings Road Arches, Brighton

All Case Studies

Challenge

A distinctive feature of the Brighton seafront, these original Victorian arches, supporting the promenade and main A529 carriageway above, were beginning to deteriorate and needed strengthening and refurbishing.

Solution

The solution was to demolish and rebuild the structures with a new reinforced deck and brickwork façade. Working closely with Ibstock Kevington, the new façade was developed as a series of precast pillar sections and segmental fair-faced arches, cast as single 3-metre wide units and faced with Ibstock Cattybrook Cheddar Red brick slips. Infill courses of matching brickwork were used to frame each arch and every detail, from narrow 5mm joints to elaborate brick plinths and bullnose arch trim, exactly recreated to match the original design.
