YOUR CONCEPT
i9 is an award-winning and eye-catching modern office development at the heart of the City of Wolverhampton. Strategically positioned between the city’s railway station and civic core, the building was constructed by ION Developments for City of Wolverhampton Council, with designs by Glenn Howells Architects.
The new building provides approximately 4000 square metres of Grade A office space and a further 604 square metres of retail space over three units, bringing further investment and employment opportunities to the local area.
The distinctive, high-quality headquarters brings a modern edge to the city’s busy commercial district alongside inspired contemporary designs complimenting the already established streetscape, truly setting design and quality benchmarks for future developments within Wolverhampton.
OUR SOLUTIONS
As Wolverhampton is known for its historic family of red brick Victorian buildings, i9 was built using Ibstock’s Aldridge Smooth Red bricks, creating a characterising and eye-catching red brick façade. This pays homage to the industrial characteristics of the city’s Victorian architecture and ensured sensitivity to neighbouring landmarks such as the Chubb Buildings and Prince Albert public house.
The building’s bull-nose, curved glass corners, deep brickwork piers and 350mm deep brick reveals complement one another within the design to generate eye-catching geometry. 4m high brickwork colonnade extends around the perimeter of the building, maintaining a strong form while also creating a defined top with depth and interest to the upper-most level.
i9 Wolverhampton
“i9 is a highly contemporary design that doesn’t look out of place aside the historical architecture surrounding it, thanks to the smart use of appropriate and eye-catching, top-quality brickwork,” said, Irina Hughes, Design Advisor at Ibstock.
“The way the entire building has been designed provides elegance and form using strong brick materiality, something the 2021 Brick Award judges agreed with, seeing this project win the Commercial Building category. Overall, the building is a superb commercial workspace that was extremely well executed and constructed with crisp detailing and striking features, making a strong statement in the local Wolverhampton area while providing vital economic growth opportunities.”
