YOUR CONCEPT
This project for Brentwood Preparatory school comprised of an expansion and re-ordering of the school with two new buildings along with the remodelling and refurbishment of existing buildings.
It was developed within the setting of the Grade II listed Middleton Hall. The architectural character and materiality drew upon the adjacent listed building whilst retaining a contemporary and playful interpretation.
OUR SOLUTIONS
The facades of the classroom block reflect the ordered geometry and proportions of the ‘original’ Georgian Middleton Hall and local precedent Hutton Hall. Layering through different colours of brick, facade depth and recessed elements within the arcade and entrance porch reflect the overlaid character of Middleton Hall with its neo-Elizabethan elements applied over the Georgian brick hall.
The materials complement the original combination of soft red brick and stone dressings, with a soft red brick and mottled grey brick. The grey brick forming the lower band on the new hall is a custom blend of Leicester Grey and Leicester weathered grey stock, the predominant red brick is a Heritage County blend giving a varied tone and texture. All the facework is laid in a quarter-bond, following the angled gable geometries at high level.
Polychromatic patterning is used to form a bold chevron pattern to the gables and pronounce the arches and bullseye window features, in the contrasting grey stock. The brickwork gables to both buildings are hand-laid in raked soldier courses, triple stack-bonded and arranged in striped bands.
Prep School
This aesthetically spectacular architecture was achieved through the collaboration of architect, brickwork contractor and main contractor who together, utilised the Ibstock brick range to finish new buildings that complement the originality and heritage of the site and its existing dwellings.
Heritage County Blend, Leicester Grey Stock and Leicester Weathered Grey Ibstock bricks were used throughout this development, highlighting the comprehensiveness and flexibility of the Ibstock range to suit any project.
